How to prepare ground for new turf
New turf needs firm, level and suitable soil beneath it. Make sure removal, soil improvement and waste are covered in the quote.

Remove what should not remain
Old turf, weeds, stones and building debris can interfere with rooting. The quote should clarify what will be lifted, how deeply the area will be excavated and where spoil will go. If access is narrow, agree how material will be moved through the property or garden.
Check soil, compaction and drainage
Compacted soil restricts root growth. The prepared area should be assessed for hard layers, shallow topsoil and water that collects after rain. The right remedy depends on the site; adding a thin layer of soil will not correct every underlying problem.
Set the finished levels
Levels should be planned where the lawn meets the house, paths, patios and borders. The surface should shed water away from the building and avoid creating trip edges. Ask how the final height will be checked before turf is delivered.
Make the specification clear
- Removal and disposal of the existing surface
- Topsoil type and depth, where additional soil is needed
- Levelling and final preparation of the bed
- Turf blend, delivery timing and laying method
- Watering, access and first-mow advice
The preparation is difficult to judge once the lawn is finished. A written quote that describes it before work starts helps you understand what is included.
